It’s coming…

LifT 2 to Mid-Mountain
There are 1100 acres of skiable terrain within Skeetawk’s lease area, of which Skeetawk’s current triple chairlift only accommodates 30 acres. Skeetawk will install a mile long lift to provide access to 500 acres of skiable terrain within the lease area.
Since Skeetawk’s first season in 2020, the number of customers utilizing Skeetawk each winter has grown steadily. To meet the demand for more alpine recreation, Skeetawk will install a longer and higher capacity lift — a detachable gondola. This gondola will transport users higher up the mountain, accessing substantially more skiable acreage and increased difficulty of ski runs.

—Why a gondola?
A gondola installation provides the greatest benefit to Skeetawk’s community from a financial standpoint and long term planning rationale.
pass price
One of Skeetawk’s core principles is Accessibility and Affordability with the objective to provide the mental and physical health benefits from wintertime outdoor recreation at a low entry to cost. To purchase a high capacity lift, regardless of lift type, Skeetawk will be required to incur a large amount of debt service (estimated 10-15 million dollars of debt for any lift type). After evaluating the multiple lift types on the market, the Skeetawk board of directors selected a detachable gondola as the preferred choice for Lift 2. The rationale for this choice stems from the ability to maximize year-round revenue, which will keep pass prices lower.
Hatcher Pass is an extremely popular destination for both summer and winter recreators. Gondola rides are the most preferred form of summertime lift accessed recreation due to ride comfort and protection from the elements. Skeetawk plans to capitalize on the popularity of summer visitors to Hatcher Pass, generating revenue from summer gondola rides which will supplement regular wintertime skiing/snowboarding revenue. The revenue from summer visitors will reduce Skeetawk’s need to increase wintertime pass prices to pay off the debt service. Essentially, Skeetawk will be able to keep pass prices cheaper for local skiers/boarders, because of revenue generated from summer visitors.
Economic development
Skeetawk’s development as a year round recreation attractor in the Matanuska Susitna Borough (MSB), will have a trickle down economic benefit to the greater Borough. Per the organization’s lease with MSB, Skeetawk will only ever function as a day use facility, meaning no overnight accommodations or services outside of those which directly support alpine recreation activities. This lease restriction leaves room for entrepreneurial growth from local businesses within the MSB to step in and provide amenities typically found with alpine recreation (i.e. hotels, restaurants, service shops, etc). Installing a lift that more holistically supports year round recreation, will maximize year round economic growth for the region.
Physical Access
The gondola will allow for a greater number of users than just skiers, boarders, and mountain bikers to access the mountains. The gondola will better support people with access limitations (physical or mental disabilities, elderly, unable to ski/ride) in a manner that a traditional chairlift cannot support during normal operations. Skeetawk will provide carriers for adaptive ski/ride equipment to efficiently load and unload the gondola for the user’s preferred activity.

—How
Skeetawk has engaged Doppelmayr USA, Inc to provide a quote for a turn key installation. Doppelmayr has provided Skeetawk a unique solution where the lift framework will be engineered to support an ultimate carrying capacity of 2400 people per hour (pph), but Doppelmayr will only deliver half the cabins (1200 pph) at installation, reducing Skeetawk’s initial purchase price. As revenue grows, Skeetawk will continue to purchase additional cabins until the maximum carrying capacity is reached.
breakdown cost for Lift 2:
- • $13,835,000 – Equipment, Engineering, and Installation provided by Doppelmayr
- • $4,165,000 – Shipping and Buyer construction costs (buildings, earthwork, access costs)
- • $2,000,000 – Project contingencies
As previously mentioned, Skeetawk is prepared to incur a large debt service to finance this gondola purchase. Skeetawk has engaged multiple local financial institutions to acquire a loan package. The State Small Business Credit Initiative has provided Skeetawk with a $10 million loan guarantee through partnership with a local financial institution for a complete loan package of $13 million dollars.
Skeetawk is pursuing the remaining $7 million dollars through grants, foundations, corporate giving, and community support. Thank you to the following entities for their contribution to this project:
- • The Megan Justus Foundation
- • Blockbuster Video
- • The Funky Reggae Party
- • Vail Resorts, Inc
- • Mott’s Fruit Snacks

–the mid-mountain
Using our cabin snowcat, Skeetawk has already been operating in the mid-mountain terrain since January 2024 offering guests a chance to ride the same terrain that will be accessed by the gondola. Skeetawk also utilized the mid-mountain to host several events for the 2024 Arctic Winter Games, including giant slalom, banked slalom, and border x.

–Summer Gondola Tourism
Tourists love a gondola
Tourists love scenic views and Hatcher Pass is full of them! What many retirees and small children visiting Alaska are NOT into is hiking up steep mountainsides, berries or no. But if we put a little bar and café up on a mountain with a view, people will pay good money to take a fun gondola ride up to have a nice beverage and take photos. Not only can locals use this service to impress their visiting family and friends but local tour operators will have more options right here in the Valley for amusing their paying guests. And if people are paying to ride the gondola in the summer, it means we don’t have to charge as much to spin the lift in the winter, keeping ticket prices lower for our homies.
